In recognition of Lake Cleanup Month (#LakeLove), pro wakeboarders living in Orlando on Lake Jessamine cleaned the shorelines on October 18 in an effort to improve the quality of the lake for all residents. Part one was led by champion wakeboarders Mike Dowdy (@dirtymikedowdy) and Meagan Ethell (@meaganethell), as well as three staff members from the Water Sports Industry Association (WSIA). Interesting items included pull-tab beer cans, a complete plastic chair and a sunken, towable inner tube. Single-use plastic beverage containers topped the list and boaters are encouraged to consider reusable water bottles to help eliminate this harmful impact.
Possibly more damaging than the container material itself is the fluid and build-up found inside the bottles and cans. Truly disgusting! Part two of the cleanup effort will complete the entire perimeter of the lake and will be led by pro athletes Brian Grubb, Gordon Harrison and others. After this, residents will be hard-pressed to find any litter in the water along the shores of Lake Jessamine. Efforts are currently underway to organize #LakeLove cleanup days on Lake Holden and the Conway Chain.
