The Water Sports Industry Association, the principal trade association in the U.S. for all towed water sports, is seeking a Director of Government Affairs to develop and execute on a strategy to protect the interests of the Association’s members at the local, state and federal levels.  This person will be integral in supporting the WSIA’s activities developing best practices, maintaining waterway access rights, educating participants, promoting safety and facilitating sustainable industry growth. 

This position supports the broader work of WSIA’s advocacy and grassroots activities on behalf of the recreational boating industry throughout the United States from the local to the state and federal level. This position will be in charge of both proactive and reactive strategies that both anticipate and monitor state legislative and regulatory activity impacting the boating and water sports industry.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Development and implementation of a broad reaching government affairs strategy that can identify and manage the associations engagement on regulation that may impact the associations members.  The strategy would include:
    • Monitoring state and local regulatory activity that may impact towed watersports
    • Analyzing impact of potential regulations and development of strategies to benefit association members
    • Proactive and reactive response to potential state legislative and regulatory matters impacting towed water sports.
  • Relationship Management
    • Develop relationships with key personnel in National Association of State Boating Law Adminstrators (NASBLA), the United States Coast Guard, and other pertinent regulatory bodies or associations.  
    • Interface with city, county and state government, as well as local HOAs in regards to all matters pertaining to towed water sports.
    • Build and maintain relationships with manufacturers, dealers, key influencers and other association members.
    • Represent industry interests in coalitions, conferences, committees and meetings.
  • Strategy Implementation
    • Coordinate and collaborate with industry counterparts that include the National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Marine Retailers Association of America on all issues related to towed water sports.
    • Manage contract lobbyists, PR firms, legal teams, digital marketing firms, etc. who may be hired to focus on a specific issue.
    • Responsible for management, growth and promotion of the Families for Boating grassroots coalition.
    • Guide implementation of specific strategies such as the Aquatic Invasive Species management plan.
    • Draft testimony, letters, legislative analysis and advocacy materials for distribution to membership. 

Position Requirements:

  • Knowledge and interest in public policy and grassroots strategies. 
  • Previous policy experience with grassroots, campaign and/or fundraising. 
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Proven record of working in coalitions.
  • Self-starter, with affinity for managing multiple tasks and working in a remote but fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to travel throughout the US, occasionally with little notice.

Minimum credentials/experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Minimum five years experience including trade association or political/campaign experience
